Stetson University is an independent, co-educational university located in DeLand, which is the county seat of Volusia County, in the US state of Florida, with a population estimated at a number of more than 24 000 inhabitants, during the 2006 census. DeLand is part of the Deltona-Daytona Beach-Ormond Beach, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of nearly 437 000 inhabitants, and it is noted for its historic architecture and for the fact that it is home of Stetson University.
Stetson University was founded in 1883, as DeLand Academy, by Henry Addison DeLand, being enacted by the Florida Legislature, through the Charter of DeLand University, in 1887, as an independent institution of higher learning. The name of the institution was changed to Stetson University, in 1889, to honor hat manufacturer John B. Stetson, who was a benefactor of the university, serving as a founding trustee, along with town founder Henry A. DeLand and others.
Today, Stetson is the only university affiliated with the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation in Florida, being nationally recognized for its commitment to service and social justice-based community engagement and community-engaged learning. According to a 2010 edition of the U.S. News and World Report, Stetson is the 3rd best college among Southern Masters-granting institutions, offering its students over 60 undergraduate minors and majors.
The athletic teams from Stetson are known as the Stetson Hatters, who compete in Division I’s Atlantic Sun Conference, the university being a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, in various sports, which include basketball, baseball, soccer, softball and golf. The Hatters have experienced victory many times in the past years, including in 1935, when the football team earned its 100th victory, also winning, since 1970, in baseball, a total of 7 Atlantic Sun Conference championships, accomplishing 16 appearances in the NCAA Regionals, as well.
